The interactive creation of concept maps or semantic networks from text: a stimulus for the dyslexic's autonomy and a productivity tool for everyone

Tested and demonstrated the positive role of knowledge management methods in some learning impairments (for instance dyslexia and visual impairment) at any age, the problem of the map construction remained: who must "read" the text to select the concepts? A function to select text segments to directly create concepts (including listening and spell check) renders the learner autonomous and solves the problem. In practice, this function is also used in business environments as a productivity tool.

Formal learning experiment with Knowledge Manager for dyslexia

The Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Learning (CTR) of Cagliari (Sardinia) has developed a study with the aim of analyzing in detail the effects of cognitive treatment, based on the use of Knowledge Manager concept maps, on dyslexic children of various ages. The aim of the study was to verify the possibility of obtaining an improved quality of learning and an improved acceptance of learning activities due to the attraction and efficiency of the method and technology used. They were all asked to apply the method to their school homework for a brief period (two months) after which they had the option of completing out an anonymous questionnaire in order to assess their opinions on the experiment carried out and pleasure they found in using the software. Their parents too could reply to parallel questions regarding their observations on their child's experience.

Knowledge plus Data management in Knowledge Master: a data dimension to knowledge

Data management functions have been included in the enterprise version of KM. Now it's possible to associate complete data structures (just a like an internal data base, with most used data types) to knowledge elements (nodes, concepts). A complete set of data modeling, search and calculations (math and statistic) functions is available for knowledge management activities, project management, including Gantt graphs, business intelligence strategies, and the like. Whenever the combination of knowledge and data is required. Export to CSV format has been added. This update is important for companies, consultants, schools in which these activities are included in the curriculum, that might range from middle schools to specialized economics, commerce and business courses. Besides inner data management, ODBC external database management is also included. All in a single package.

The Knowledge Master experience with learning and autism

Abilities and difficulties of people with autistic spectrum disorders have a strong incidence in learning, from facilitating it, up to the limit of completely hindering it. Adverse characteristics of the autistic kid can find support in KM technology, and favorable characteristics can take advantage of it, to create a propitious and effective learning context, and such has been the effect of using Knowledge Master software. As with other special needs (dyslexia, ADD, working memory issues, etc) in IIC of Buenos Aires, learning for the impaired youngsters (in this case, students affected with autistic disorders) has been successful. These students have not only learned, but have also presented their coursework to peers and faculty. This is an effect of using the student centered, interactive and automated KM technology and strategies, that emulate most human learning processes.
